AMERICAN UNIVERSITY – DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEM

When American University (AU) engaged the Fulcrum Group to help develop a capital renewal program for their aging steam and chilled water infrastructure, Fulcrum developed an expansive capital program that would modernize the campus’ district energy and microgrid systems.

Fulcrum and AU partnered to execute the ambitious $50 million infrastructure modernization project, which was implemented over a period of four years. Fulcrum provided design-build services to the University to facilitate a seamless delivery of the project, which included a gut rehabilitation of the central power plant, installation of nearly 8 miles of underground piping, new condensing hot water boilers, cogeneration power systems, absorption chillers, and a 2,000-ton ultra-high efficiency electric chiller plant, in addition to converting over 3 million square feet of campus buildings from steam to hot water heating.
