The New York City Health and Hospital Corporation (NYC H+H) is the largest municipal healthcare system in the US, providing inpatient, outpatient, and home-based services to more than 70 locations across the city’s five boroughs. The expansive health system engaged the Fulcrum Group to provide energy master planning services to five of its signature campuses, comprising over 6.0M GSF of diverse healthcare facilities. As part of the multi-year effort, Fulcrum developed long-term capital spending plans that focused on asset renewal, expansion, decarbonization, and energy efficiency. In close collaboration with the H+H executive management team, Fulcrum designed ambitious capital spending plans that included deep retrofits of the systems’ critical energy infrastructure. Examples of the project types studied and recommended included:
- Steam heating conversions to low-temperature hot water
- Electrification of district heating systems
- Close-coupled ground source heating & cooling
- District chilled water systems upgrades
- Variable-air-volume HVAC conversions
- Building envelope upgrades
- Onsite solar photovoltaic systems
- Lighting & lighting controls upgrades
- Building management system upgrades
- Exhaust heat recovery systems
- Demand control ventilation systems
